VNC provides a “virtual desktop” so it is more lightweight than a full blown desktop installation. There is a better way however, and that is to install VNC. As a result many people actually install Ubuntu Desktop instead of installing Ubuntu Server since the desktop version of Ubuntu has the GUI built in.
